Annandale Design Featured In Staircase Design Bible Annandale Design has cemented its position as the UK's leading manufacturer and installer of architectural metalwork, as one of its projects is featured in the definitive staircase book, "Staircases: Design And Construction" by Karl J Habermann, published in December 2002. In his book, which aims to act as a technical reference as well as providing inspiration for architects when considering stairs, Karl Habermann reviews the history of stairs, the current technologies being employed and draws upon an extensive range of international examples to illustrate the design opportunities that can be incorporated into the most critical part of any interior. Annandale's stunning spiral staircase at Scotland's Architecture and Design centre, The Lighthouse in Glasgow, is one of only two UK contracts used as case studies in the book. Allan Frew, Annandale's Managing Director, said "When we found our work was to be featured in this book, we were a little surprised but extremely proud. However the finished staircase has a number of fantastic design elements and is one that befits a building that has become Scotland's Architecture and Design Centre." The staircase, which has become one of the most featured aspects of The Lighthouse, features filigree stainless steel handrails and perforated sheet metal balustrades to allow the warm colour of the exterior walls and natural light to shine through. To enhance the warm colours of the tower, which previously held the water tank for the sprinkler system for the former Glasgow Herald Building, Light American Oak treads lie on recessed steel flat strings. Allan continued, "Of course much of the credit must be attributed to Page and Page, the architects that designed the staircase, who must be delighted that their work will act as an inspiration to other designers."
